Meet Demetra

Heyyy!! I’m Demetra (you can call me Dee or Deme), and I’m the author behind In the Mirror of God. I’m honored to be the vessel God uses to help spread His Word via this online ministry.

I love God and His Word, and I’m a fanatic about teaching other Christian women to learn and love God’s Word as well.

My Story

I was born and raised in Richmond, VA. Ironically, as a kid, I had very little interest in God or the Bible. I actually hated the fact that my mom used to make me go to church. After all, Sundays were a part of the weekend, and weekends were for fun. Getting up early, wearing fancy clothes, and wasting half of my Sunday at church was NOT my idea of fun (regardless of the snacks they would give out in Sunday school).

But even then, we weren’t really Christians yet. Church was just a religious formality, and honestly, I believe it was a way for my mom to cope with all the crap that was going on in her life and the difficulties she was having with my dad at the time.

Two neighborhood evangelists met with my parents sometime after my father had been released from a short stint in jail. They gave their lives to Christ and started attending bible studies. It was the change in my father’s life that caught my attention. The dad I knew NEVER went to church, let alone attended a bible study, read the bible, or even prayed. He did drugs, stole my allowance money, had been in trouble with the law, had been on house arrest, and caused my mother grief several times over.

When I saw him become a completely different and better person after accepting Jesus as Savior, I knew God was real, and I was curious to know more about this Jesus who was capable of such dynamic change in people. Shortly thereafter, I became a follower of Jesus at the age of 12, along with my younger sister. Although I remember saying the “sinner’s prayer” with one eye open and one eye closed, Jesus definitely started something new in my life from that moment on.

As a teenager, I developed a strong love for God and His Word. I started enjoying church and even attending adult Bible study classes. By age 14, I was even teaching children’s Bible study in our home once a week.

I graduated from high school at 16 as valedictorian of my class and could have gone to any school I wanted to. But God had given me such a strong passion for learning His Word that I turned down all opportunities and decided to pursue a biblical education instead.

That choice took me to Langhorne, PA, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies from Philadelphia Biblical University (now Cairn University) in December 2001.  College is also where I met my now ex-husband, whom I married a week after graduation.

We decided to stay and settle in Philly with the vision of starting a church. By the grace of God, over the course of about 10 years, we had a son and started and grew a ministry to about 200 members in Levittown, PA.

Unfortunately, in late 2012, due to a series of unforeseen events and personal mistakes, I lost my husband, my home, and my church all within the same year. As a result, I had to move back to Virginia with my parents. At the time, I thought I had no purpose at all because I had lost everything that I felt gave me purpose.

I went through a six-month period of depression, self-hatred, confusion, anger and bitterness. I even contemplated thoughts of suicide. But during that lowest and darkest period of my entire life, it was the Word of God that truly saved my life.

I had no one to turn to that I could really express the depth of the pain and hurt I was feeling at the time.  I didn’t know what to do, and I honestly felt like I was going to lose my mind.  One day, with the tiniest ounce of strength I had and with tears in my eyes, I picked up my bible.  I didn’t know where to start or even have the energy to read.  So, I just opened up to page one in Genesis.

I would lay in bed for days.  Lights off.  Crying.  But somehow, I managed to saturate myself with God’s Word in the midst of it – only a few minutes at a time.  My problems did not dissolve overnight.  The pain, sorrow, anguish, fear, doubt, shame, and stress certainly didn’t vanish either.  But God, through His Word and the presence of His Spirit within me, held me tightly every single one of those dark days, giving me a little glimpse of light that shined a little brighter each day.

That is the power of God and His Word.  And NOTHING else on earth compares to it.

Looking back in retrospect, I now know that my time in Philadelphia served a very specific purpose, for a specific season, in accordance with God’s will for my life.  I had to learn that my ultimate purpose and identity didn’t revolve around my ex-husband, my ministry, my place in Philly, my old job and salary, or my old friends.

God taught me that although situations and people change, I ALWAYS have a purpose in Him, and my ultimate purpose to serve and honor God NEVER changes.

Although I serve in different capacities than I used to, today, I still honor and obey God – as a single mother and a full-time Uber driver. I still utilize my spiritual gift of teaching as a Christian blogger and author, online teacher, children’s Sunday school teacher, and women’s bible study teacher.

Yes, my life has changed dramatically over the last ten years since I moved back to VA, but God is still God, and I will always serve Him, in purpose and on purpose, no matter what.

Now, that’s my testimony. But what can the Word of God do in your life if you allow it to?

It is my sincere prayer that this website will encourage Christian women around the globe to stop looking for help, relief, solutions, and quick fixes in all the wrong places and instead look to God through the mirror of His Word for clear guidance and direction about everything.

I’m nowhere near being a perfect Christian woman.  In fact, I will be fumbling along the way throughout my entire journey to heaven. But one thing I know for sure is that God is with me, and through His Word, He teaches me every day exactly how to push through and be victorious in my Christian life.  My mission is to challenge, encourage, and equip you to do the same.

Let’s dive into the mirror of God together so we can be truly equipped to think biblically, conquer, and enjoy everyday life!
